What is Synchrodoody?

I could go at this a few different ways. I could give you a bullet list of whiz-bang features. I could drone on enumerating a the nifty things it does. I could have some snazzy Flash based lie generator numb at least half your brain with the amazing value of Synchrodoody.

Unfortunately (actually fortunately for you) I don’t want to. I think the most effective explanation I can give is why I wanted this thing.

A few beginning facts:

  1. I have multiple Macs, desktop and PowerBook.
  2. I have a network set up in my home, wired and wireless.
  3. Believe it or not, I’m not just trying to brag here.
  4. I (used to) commute (with my PowerBook) on the train (where I use(d) said PowerBook).
  5. I have young children (those of you with or who have had young children know what that does to available computing time and having that time in anything resembling a contiguous block).
  6. When home I greatly prefer to work on my main desktop machine.

So, given this information, you should understand when I tell you that I get little pieces of data (or "life nuggets™") strewn about on multiple machines, URLs to look at, to do items, things to get at the hardware store, etc.

And quite honestly it is a complete pain in the ass to manage all these things and have them when/where I want them. So as you might guess, I created Synchrodoody to address this problem.

Synchrodoody maintains a database of these little scraps of life and via Rendezvous (initially) will synchronize them with other instance of itself (Get it? ‘Synchro-’ for synchronize, ‘-doody’ because it sounds funny). You set up what other Synchrodoodies that you want to get stuff from (and periodically if desired) and when they show up on the network (a ‘friend’), you pull their little nuggets of joy automagically. Note that I use “pull”. Synchrodoody takes a pull type view of the synchronization operation. A synchronization only involves asking the friend Synchrodoody for the items it has, the local version does not push its items to the friend. Thus to fully synchronize two Synchrodoodies, they must define each other as friends.

It is set up this way to allow for maximum flexibility in how the Synchrodoody network operates. In my case I want all Synchrodoodies to be friends with the others because I want all items available to me whichever machine I am on. But lets say I want a way to let everyone in my group at work see the latest project news (yes I know I could use email, help me out here, its just an example). All the users in the group would set the Synchrodoody with the news items as friend, but the news Synchrodoody would not need to be the friend of any other as it just needs to be a broadcaster.

The one other critical aspect of Synchrodoody is what to do with all those "Life Nuggets™" now that they are safely nestled in the database? It could be cluttered quite quickly by remiders to buy milk, timely articles to look at that are no longer timely, etc. Well Synchrodoody helps out by "fading" items. When an item is created, you can define its lifespan; days, weeks, months, or just don't ever fade it. This way things stay tidier.

License

For now, Synchrodoody is free. That is THIS version is free. The next version might be free too, hell, all future versions might be free. I mean seriously, in its current state you would have to be a bit iffy to have a strong desire to pay for it (don’t let me stop you though if you are doggedly determined to send me money). But there is always the chance that it won’t be free at some point.

FAQs

Q: Did you mean to make the icon that ugly?

A: Yes. It's ulgliness represents man's inhumanity to man. Honestly, if you have significantly more artistic ability than me and want to make an icon, please do. If I use it, you will go in the credits and receive at the very least some free licenses if I ever end up selling Synchrodoody (its good to have dreams).

Q: Oh crap! Metal?!

A: I know how you feel. But it just looks more right for Synchrodoody. And with Finder being metal now, metal itself doesn't seem quite so garish now.

Q: Thats it? Those are the only FAQs?

A: Give me a break. I have a pretty firm handle on my understanding of Synchrodoody. You realize these are made up right? If I ever get any real ones I will add them.
